SWING DANCE, JITTERBUG SWING DANCE, LINDYHOP SWING DANCE, JIVE SWING DANCE

Swing dance is a lively dance style in which couples swing, spin and jump together to fast-paced music. . It uses a lot of jazz steps. There are many styles of swing from different eras. In the 1920’s jazz scene, Lindy Hop involved an 8-count circular basic or "swing out." Jitterbug got its name from fast, often bouncy movements. Jive is one of the a Latin style ballroom dancing, and incorporates many Fox Trot and Jitterbug steps. Rock & Roll developed in the 1950s in response to the music. Today LeRoc & Ceroc are forms of Modern Jive, that mixes Swing, Lindy Hop and Rock and Roll to simplify the footwork.

All these swing styles are sometime seen in period movies, such as "Grease" and "Footloose." Swing dance is also very popular in a lot of competitions and even includes “Team Formation,” where a minimum of 3 to 5 couples perform a prechoreographed routine of different formations.

SWING DANCE STYLES
Swing dancing originated in the 1920's. Since then over 30 styles of swing dance have developed. Below are the most popular.

Jitterbug Swing Dance
The jitterbug uses fast and bouncy dance steps. The term was famously associated with swing era dancers by band leader Cab Calloway because, as he put it, "They look like a bunch of jitterbugs out there on the floor."
Lindyhop Swing Dance
The Lindyhop combines elements of both partner dances and solo dancing. The movements and improvisation uses the formal eight-count structure. This is most clearly illustrated in the Lindyhop's basic swing dance step, the swingout. In the open position, each dancer is connected hand-to-hand while in its closed position, men and women are connected as though in an embrace.
Jive Swing Dance
Jive is an included dance of International Style Ballroom dancing. It initially was based on Eastern swing brought to England by Americans Troops in World War II and evolved before becoming the now standardized form of today.
